This lovely patio in Bromley was built from sand stone flags, the main patio stretches across the entire back of the house and down each side and covers an area of about 150 square meters,once the edging stones have been layed onto a footing of concrete the rest of the patio is layed on a consolidated hardcore subase then a layer of compacted type1 road hogging, finally the stones are layed on sharp sand and cement mix of 6-1 leaving a gap between each one of at least 10mm but no more than 15mm for pointing,this gap is crucial as it locks the finished patio together,if the gap is to narrow it becomes difficult to pack the pointing mix into the gap leaving it week and susceptible to frost, if the gap is to wide it not only makes the joint susceptible to cracking so when washing the stones it lifts out, but also spoils the look, in this case the patio is layed under the shadow of some huge sycamore trees,they drop sap which stains the stones so the whole patio has to be jet washed at least twice a year.
